Rick Davis "Wink and a Nod" Cranker
Davis' mechanical wooden sculptures are called Crankers and he has been making these fun works since his high school days.
Crankers came by as a way to engage the viewer with his sculptures. Having the piece powered by a hand crank allows the viewer to connect individually with the piece, even just for a quick moment. Davis tries to inject a little humor into the work, because life is not always so serious. Davis claims,
Crankers have given Davis the opportunity to tap into his engineering side. Making the piece move requires other parts of the brain to be engaged in the effort, and gives a larger sense of joy when piece is finished.
"If I have made my viewers smile, I think the work is a success!"
