Loons have four main types of calls: the temolo, the yodel, the wail and the hoot. The temolo call or ‘laughing” call is used by the birds in territorial disputes or in case of alarm. The yodel is also used in territorial disputes, but only by males. The wail which is often compared to a wolf’s howl is used for communicating location as is the hoot. Though the hoot is shorter and softer.
